Annually on the last full weekend in June the American Radio Relay League has it’s Field Day. Our club sponsors this event every year, and would be more than happy to show you around, and discuss a wonderful hobby. This is part of a world-wide event. The Coos County Radio Club will be setting up operations at Bastendorff Beach County Park, on June 23, 2007. We will begin operations at 11:00 am, Saturday morning and will operate around the clock until 11:00am Sunday morning. Field Day is an event to test the readiness of Amateur Emergency Communications under less than ideal conditions. It’s an excellent opportunity to sharpen our emergency communications skills. Generators and batteries are used for power. Antennas are set up using trees, existing structures, and portable towers. The goal is to put together an organized, working station and commence radio operation as quickly as possible. The League estimates that more than 35,000 hams participate in Field Day every year. The ARRL Field Organization has been effective in establishing emergency communications nets during floods, hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. State and County emergency/disaster teams include members of our Club, who have specialized training. In their plans and we are a regular part of the local team, filling a vital communications role during exercises and actual events. Our local hams have participated in emergency responses to fires, floods and other natural disasters. Coos County has about 460 licensed ham operators. About 35 of them will be at Bastendorff Beach County Park on June 23rd and 24th, 2007. Some of the other events for Field Day will be: 1.Public awareness and education 2.Aid with license training (approximately 50 in the past two years. 3.Picnic and pot-luck Amateur Radio is often considered a male-only hobby, but fully 1/3 of our club members are ladies.
